General FAQInsurance
What is Naturopathic Medicine?+

Naturopathic medicine combines natural therapies with the rigor of modern medical science to treat the whole person — body, mind, and environment. Rather than focusing solely on symptom suppression, naturopathic physicians are trained to identify and address the underlying causes of illness while supporting the body’s innate ability to heal and maintain balance.

In Washington State, licensed naturopathic physicians (NDs) are recognized as primary care providers. They complete a four-year, graduate-level medical education at an accredited naturopathic medical school, such as Bastyr University, with training that closely parallels conventional medical education. This includes extensive coursework and clinical experience in biomedical sciences, diagnosis, physical examination, laboratory testing, pharmacology, and patient care across the lifespan.

Washington-licensed naturopathic physicians are trained and licensed to:

  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions
  • Provide pediatric and adult primary care
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests and imaging
  • Prescribe medications when clinically appropriate
  • Offer preventive care, wellness visits, and health counseling

  • Naturopathic philosophy emphasizes individualized care, prevention, and using the least invasive and most appropriate therapies to support healing. Treatment plans may include nutrition and lifestyle counseling, supplements, botanical medicine, conventional pharmaceuticals, or referrals to specialists — always guided by evidence, safety, and the specific needs of each patient.

At Flourish Family Medicine, our naturopathic physicians practice within the full scope of Washington State licensure while maintaining a collaborative approach to care. Our goal is to support long-term health and resilience through thoughtful, comprehensive medical care — partnering with patients and, when needed, with other healthcare providers to ensure the best possible outcomes.

What Can I Expect From Care at Flourish Family Medicine?+

    Your First Visit

At your initial appointment, your physician will take the time to get to know you as a whole person. This visit typically includes:

  • A comprehensive review of your medical history and current health concerns
  • Review of current medications and supplements
  • Discussion of lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress
  • A focused physical examination when appropriate
  • Ordering laboratory tests or health screenings as needed to complete an assessment

  • We use both conventional diagnostic approaches and the principles of naturopathic medicine to guide clinical decision-making.

    Your Personalized Care Plan

After your assessment, your physician will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan based on your needs and goals. Recommendations may include:

  • Nutrition and lifestyle guidance
  • Dietary counseling and therapeutic nutrition
  • Botanical or herbal medicine
  • Supplements
  • Physical or supportive therapies

  • When clinically appropriate, prescription medications, referrals, or collaboration with other healthcare providers may also be part of your care.

    Visit Length

  • Initial visits: Approximately 60 minutes
  • Follow-up visits: Typically 30–45 minutes, depending on your care needs
  • Preventative Wellness Exams: 45-60 minutes
  • Acute illness visits: 15 minutes

  • We prioritize listening, collaboration, and thoughtful care so you leave your visit with a clear understanding of next steps.

Can Flourish Family Medicine Be My Primary Care Provider?+

Yes. Flourish Family Medicine serves as the primary care provider for the majority of our patients.

Our licensed naturopathic physicians in Washington State are trained and authorized to provide comprehensive primary care for children and adults, including preventive care, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic conditions, laboratory testing, and prescription medications when clinically appropriate.

Most patients choose to establish Flourish Family Medicine as their primary care practice. Some patients, depending on their goals or insurance coverage, choose to maintain another primary care provider and see us for additional or consultative care. Both approaches are welcome.

Patients often seek care at Flourish Family Medicine because:

  • They are looking for comprehensive primary care with a more individualized approach
  • They want additional time, education, and partnership in their healthcare
  • Symptoms persist despite normal or inconclusive standard testing
  • They experience recurring or chronic health concerns
  • They are interested in integrating lifestyle, nutrition, and evidence-informed therapies into their care

  • Our approach emphasizes thorough evaluation, thoughtful diagnostics, and personalized treatment planning. We use both conventional medical tools and naturopathic principles to support long-term health, and we collaborate with other healthcare providers when doing so best serves the patient.

    Medicare Patients

At this time, naturopathic physicians are not recognized as primary care providers under Medicare. As a result, we are unable to serve as a primary care provider for Medicare beneficiaries. Patients with Medicare may choose to see us for adjunctive or consultative care.

    Minor Care in Washington State+

Washington State law outlines specific rules regarding medical consent, privacy, and access to medical records for patients under age 18. These laws apply to all healthcare providers and are designed to balance parental involvement with a minor’s legal right to confidential care.

    Consend & Privacy for Minors

    In general:

  • A parent or legal guardian must provide consent for medical care for minors under age 18.
  • Washington State law allows minors to consent to certain types of healthcare without parental permission, depending on the minor’s age and the type of service.

  • Examples of care a minor may consent to on their own include:

  • Reproductive and sexual health services
  • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment
  • Mental health services (age-dependent)
  • Substance use treatment (age-dependent)

  • Medical Records & Portal Access (Age 13+)

    Under Washington State law:

  • Once a minor turns 13, parents and legal guardians no longer have automatic access to the minor’s medical records.
  • Medical information related to care a minor can legally consent to on their own is considered confidential.
  • Parents or guardians may only access those records with the minor’s written permission, unless otherwise required by law.

  • How Flourish Family Medicine Handles This: Beginning at age 13, adolescent patients complete a Patient Portal Authorization for Ages 13+ form. This form allows the patient to decide:

  • Who may access their medical records and patient portal
  • What information may be shared with a parent or guardian

  • This authorization is controlled by the patient and may be updated or revoked at any time at the patient’s request.

How Adolescent Visits Are Structured at Flourish

As children enter adolescence, we gradually adjust how visits are structured to support independence, privacy, and open communication — while still valuing family involvement.

  • Beginning around ages 11–12, visits typically start with the teen and parent together, followed by a brief confidential portion with the adolescent at the end of the visit
  • No physical exam is performed without a parent or guardian present
  • After age 14, adolescents may choose whether a parent or guardian is present for part or all of the appointment

  • This approach aligns with Washington State law and best practices in adolescent healthcare, helping teens build autonomy while maintaining appropriate family involvement.

    Questions or Concerns

These laws and policies apply to all healthcare providers in Washington State. If you have questions about consent, privacy, portal access, or how adolescent visits are handled, our office is happy to review this information with you prior to scheduling.

Will My Insurance Cover Naturopathic Medicine?+

Insurance coverage for naturopathic medicine varies by plan and is not guaranteed, even when a provider is listed as in-network.

While Flourish Family Medicine may be contracted with your insurance company, your individual plan may or may not include coverage for naturopathic services. Coverage depends on the specific benefits outlined in your policy, including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and visit limits.

As a small practice, we do not have a dedicated insurance benefits verification department. It is the patient’s responsibility to verify their insurance benefits and understand their specific plan coverage prior to their visit. Our team can confirm whether we are in-network with your insurance but cannot determine what services your plan will cover.

If you would like to verify coverage, we recommend contacting the customer service number on the back of your insurance card.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company+

    Preventive Visits vs. Problem-Focused Visits+

    Preventive Visits

Preventive visits focus on maintaining health, identifying concerns early, and supporting long-term wellness.

    These visits typically include:

  • A comprehensive physical exam
  • Review of personal and family medical history
  • Age-appropriate screenings
  • Vaccine counseling, shared decision-making, and immunization administration
  • Discussion of nutrition, lifestyle, and preventive health strategies

  • Preventive visits are designed to support overall health and disease prevention.

Important billing note: If additional concerns (such as rashes, headaches, illness, ADHD concerns, lab review, or other new or ongoing issues) are evaluated or treated during a preventive visit, your insurance may consider the visit problem-focused in addition to preventive care.

    In these cases:

  • An additional diagnosis code may be added to the visit
  • Your insurance may apply a copay, coinsurance, or deductible based on your plan

  • Please let your provider know at the start of your visit if you prefer to limit the appointment strictly to preventive care. If you are unsure whether a concern may affect billing, you are welcome to ask your provider during the visit.

    Problem-Focused Visits+

Problem-focused visits are scheduled to evaluate and manage specific health concerns.

During these visits, your provider will:

  • Thoroughly review your symptoms and medical history
  • Perform an appropriate exam
  • Order labs or imaging if needed
  • Develop a diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include medications, supplements, or other recommendations

  • Follow-up visits for ongoing concerns focus on monitoring progress and adjusting care as needed.

    How Office Visits Are Coded+

Office visits are billed based on time spent and medical complexity, in accordance with insurance guidelines.

    This includes:

  • Time spent reviewing your health history prior to your appointment
  • Face to face time during your visit
  • Reviewing records and test results
  • Ordering labs or imaging
  • Coordinating care and/or referrals
  • Clinical documentation completed before and after your appointment
  • Billing & visit types

    What Is a Deductible?+

    Preventive Visits

A deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket each year for covered healthcare services before your insurance begins to contribute.

    How it works:

If your plan has a $500 deductible, you are responsible for paying 100% of eligible charges until you have paid $500. Once your deductible is met, your insurance will begin sharing the cost of your care.

    What Is a Copay?+

A copay is a fixed amount you pay at the time of service for certain types of visits. Copays are determined by your insurance plan and may vary depending on the type of care.

    How it works:

    Your plan may require:
  • A $30 copay for a primary care visit
  • A $50 copay for a specialist visit
  • A $150 copay for an emergency room visit

  • Copay amounts are typically listed on your insurance card.

    What is Coinsurance?+

Coinsurance is the percentage of the visit cost you are responsible for after your deductible has been met.

    How it works:

If you have met your $500 deductible and your plan has 15% coinsurance, you would pay 15% of the visit cost while your insurance covers the remaining 85%.

    Non-Covered Services+

The following services are not billable to insurance and are the patient’s responsibility:

  • Lab scheduling fee: $20
  • IV Therapy facility fee: $50
  • After-hours or urgent page: $50
  • Late payment fee: $5 per billing cycle
  • No-show fee:
  • $50 (established patients)
  • $100 (new patients)
  • Nutrient IV therapies: Pricing varies
  • Nutrient injections: Pricing varies
  • Costs & payment options

Insurance plans can vary widely, even within the same carrier. Being in-network does not guarantee coverage for all services. Understanding how your plan works can help you anticipate out-of-pocket costs.

Coverage, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance are determined by your individual insurance plan. As a small practice, we are unable to verify detailed benefits on your behalf. We recommend contacting your insurance carrier directly to understand your specific coverage and financial responsibility.

    Important Reminder

Can I Get Labs Done in the Office?+

Yes. For patient convenience, we have a full-time phlebotomist who can perform blood draws either during or after your appointment, or at a separately scheduled time.

    Please note:

  • A $20 lab scheduling fee applies to all in-office blood draws
  • If you prefer, we can provide a lab order and a list of off-site lab locations instead
  • How Much Will Labs Cost?+

The cost of laboratory testing varies depending on the type of testing ordered and your insurance coverage.

We work with several laboratories based on clinical needs, with Labcorp serving as our primary lab for routine blood work. Laboratories process and bill testing separately from our office, and most labs will bill your insurance directly. You may receive a bill from the laboratory for services performed.

Because lab billing is handled by the laboratory, we are unable to provide cost estimates in advance. If you have questions about coverage, your provider can share the list of recommended tests so you can contact your insurance company directly for clarification.

    Additional Information+

Office visits are billed based on time spent and medical complexity, in accordance with insurance guidelines.

    This includes:

  • Supplements are not billable or covered by insurance
  • HSA/FSA cards are accepted, and documentation can be provided for reimbursement when applicable
  • Patients must be established with our practice before laboratory testing can be ordered or performed

  • Establishing care ensures we can provide safe, appropriate testing and follow-up for every patient.
